GIVING OUR KIDS THEIR INDEPENDENCE COMES AT A PRICE

This morning when taking my sons to school we got off bus to walk to their school and my 7 years old son got way ahead of me and my 10 years old son. It wasn't till we caught up to my 7 years old I found out that a man stopped him on his scooter and asked if he wanted a ride. My son told me he said no thank you and kept scooting to school. Now I wouldn't know this if my 10 years old hadn't told me since my 7 years old told him only. We got to school and I informed the office what had happened. Long story short the police are now involved and want to talk to my 7 years old about his encounter with the man.

The main thing I need to do is not freak out and panic him I don't want him to feel afraid or anxious about what happened, all he knows is he did everything right. I thank his school for having a Keeping Ourselves Safe police programme this helped my 7 years old keep himself safe :)

I want to give my sons their independence but why does it always come at a price, today I could've lost my 7 years old to a stranger just 'cause he scootered too far ahead of me. I remember from my childhood I walked on my own, went to the park on my own, walked to and from school on my own and nothing happened to me. This generation is so different to my generation us mums/caregivers/dads need to be aware of our kids safety without freaking them out.

We (hubby and I) followed up about our sons incident with the stranger yesterday and it turns out the police don't need to talk to us or our son, we just filed an Incident Report which we now have a copy of and they may check out CCTV footage since the man drove out of the Caltex Service Station that's when we think the man stopped our 7 years old who we think was scooting past him at that time and made his comment "Do you want a ride?". At Papanui Police Station the man at reception was quite nice when we had to make our statement of the event involving our 7 years old and the first thing he said when I told him my son had scootered too far ahead of me and my 10 years old son since we were running late for school and my 7 years old wanted to get to school fast, the man said "First of all it's not your fault." This took me by surprise he said this considering I've had other incidents with my sons and I'm pretty used to my sons getting ahead of me and I'm on medication for anxiety and depression so I never blamed myself but it was nice of him to say this for reassurance anyway.

So its done and like I said to help my 7 years old I won't make a big deal and cause him enough any more anxiety that he's good at hiding but at least he shares with his brother who then tells me anyway :)

US MUMS HAVE MORE OF AN IMPACT ON OUR KIDS THAN WE MAY THINK

There are times I feel my sons don't listen to me, like I may as well be talking to myself, but this morning my 10 years old amazed me.

Yesterday morning was a disaster getting sons ready for school, didn't want to wake up, do what they needed to get ready for school and we just made it to school on time. A crap way to start my day and their day too. Having me shout at my sons before getting them to school was awful :(

Now to this morning when my 10 years old amazed me. He woke himself up started playing on his phone and then thought "I've got better things to do than this." (his words not mine). He got dressed and not only made his own lunch he made his 7 years old brother's lunch too, got everyone breakfast (I usually skip till getting home after dropping my sons at school), brushed his teeth, combed his hair and the more amazing thing was after doing all this he still had extra time for himself. He has to tell me whats his secret 'cause what he did was amazing :)  My 10 years old said to me that it wasn't even Mothers Day and I said it doesn't have to be Mothers Day to do something nice for me, when you feel like being nice then just do it. He even said to me he'd like to do it all the time, and I said "Its nice you like to help but if you became mum I'd become a child and not want to get up in the morning and say I don't wanna get up for school!" I appreciated all my 10 years old son did this morning a fantastic start to my day and his too, but won't take advantage of his moment of kindness 'cause that would be very wrong.
What had my son do this was yesterday when it was a disaster getting ready for school I said "I'd like for you two to do what you can for yourselves and do ask for help if you need it". These words had an impact on him. When I feel I'm not listened to I actually am :)

          Freemason Lodge December 2020

Helped raise money for Air Rescue. Gift wrapping done at The Hub Hornby, Christchurch.

My husband is a member of Freemason Lodge Christchurch and invited me to volunteer to help gift wrap to help raise money for charity.
I loved it 💝

We had to go to Customer Service and sign in to have a name tag sticker printed out and wear while in mall. When we finished we had to return to Customer Service and sign out. This procedure had to be followed to protect the mall from any liability of Health and safety caused by any visitors while in mall.
I had another volunteer with me age 82 gentleman and hated technology. He started with instruction by me and I noticed his hands shaking so I asked if I could complete it for him, making sure I wasn't taking over and making him feel hopeless, he was very happy for me to finish signing him in using tablet. The lady at Customer Service noticed me helping him and said he had to do it himself, I acknowledged what she said and continued to finish his signing in well aware he knew what he was agreeing to. I understand why each person had to sign in for themself but needed to help him as we were required to be at the gift wrapping station and had to hurry, no time for patience reading every damn thing just to sign in. It was basically agreeing that while in mall the mall wasn't liable for any accidents that may happen with the Visitor signed in. Just covering themselves which is understandable on a business point of view.

It was my first time gift wrapping in public and it took some tries to tear off the wrapping paper without ripping it 😬
Met nice customers and wrapped some interesting things like triple mirror pack, and a heavy stone chopping board, lucky hubby was there cos it was very heavy to just get out of the shopping bag, he wrapped it too.

We had another volunteer from hubby's Lodge, he was great. Lovely to have him with us, great company too.

December 2021 Freemason Lodge

Yes hubby and I returned for another turn to help raise money for charity. We were in Hornby Mall, Christchurch for 2 hours and not as successful as last year but we did a different time 1600-1800. Some people didn't carry cash and others didn't want to pay a gold Coin donation for charity. The people who did give were nice, I loved seeing the kids faces no mask, lovely to see their smiles 😊 Estimate $40 donated on our 2 hour shift, not much but it's still something. During our shift wearing our masks was causing me to feel faint, I took sips of water to help me with dehydration. Wearing the mask was horrible not being able to show our smiles, yes cos of pandemic 😷

We were the last shift so at the end we had to pack up and return charity boxes to Customer service and sign out.

NZ Heart Foundation collection was forced into isolation due to Covid so ended online. My contribution to help raise money didn't do well My worst collection for charity ever 😔

March 2024.

Me and my husband collected for

Laura Fergusson Brain Injury Trust 🧠

ODYSSEY HOUSE 2024
Xmas wrapping

Special Olympics 2025
Distributing lunches for Athletes etc.
Volunteers got a lunch too, very nice to be included.

GRIEF AND LOSS OF A BELOVED DAD

I lost my Dad nearly 2 years ago to Pancreatic Cancer and within months he was gone :( After Dad died it took a long time to realise he was really gone since he lived far away from me and I only saw him few times a year. My real grief kicked in when I had my first birthday without Dad it hit me then that he was really gone :( So it's the occasions I would've heard or seen him that make me accept Dad is gone :(

We scattered his ashes a year after he died and it was sad to see my siblings and their partners and of course my Mum with tears in their eyes. Dad worked as an electrician on the Interislander and his last wish was to be cremated and have his ashes scattered in the Cook Strait as the Interislander was a HUGE PART OF HIS LIFE. The ceremony was heartfelt and seeing the men Dad worked with have such a respect for him it overwhelmed me Dad meant A LOT to many people not just his family.

Today is his birthday so feeling a little emotional knowing he's not here and all my life Dad always remembered my birthday such a special thing to show me he cared about me. One birthday he sent an ecard with smilie faces and cool music and words to tell me he loved and cared about me. I have to stop here as tears a streaming down my face realising Dad's gone :(

Okay I'm good. Just want to say when someone you love is lost to death everyone grieves in different ways and for me when it's the times I would've heard from Dad like my first birthday after he died that's when I shed some tears but he was very sick at the time and knowing he didn't suffer for long makes me feel good he's at peace.
